The WiMAX 2 Collaboration Initiative

A group of silicon suppliers, equipment makers and research organizations have joined forces to accelerate interoperability of the next release of WiMAX technology, WiMAX 2, based upon the IEEE 802.16m standard. This collaboration wants to make sure that the new WiMAX 4G protocol can compete with LTE.
The collection of 802.16m supporters have named their coalition as the WiMAX 2 Collaboration Initiative
Here's a list of the entities that have stepped forward to support the new WiMAX 4G protocol:
- Alvarion
- Beceem
- GCT Semiconductor
- Intel, Motorola
- Samsung
- Sequans
- XRONet
- ZTE
- ITRI
Here are the goals of the WiMAX 2 Collaboration Initiative:
- Technology collaboration and joint performance benchmarking
- Joint testing of 4G applications over WiMAX 2 solutions
- Early network level interoperability testing
- Plugfests to prepare for WiMAX Forum certification
This is looking good for WiMAX 4G as well as Clearwire and Sprint. A few companies including Cisco and NSN Alcatel have abandoned the technology recently but the WiMAX 2 Collaboration Initiative should help the growth of the high-speed wireless network.
